"Unless You are Planted, You Cannot Bear Much Fruit"

On Wednesday, 25th January, 2023, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifa-Agyekum ordained 9 men to the ministry of Diaconate at St. Peter Catholic Church, Somanya. They are as follows: Revs. Dickson Nukunu Abotsi, Simon Asimeng, Benjamin Danso, Richard Sam-Adjekum, Stephen Foli, Melchizedek B. Agyeman, Richard Edem Mawusi, Charles K. Duah Jnr., and Silas K. Modzi.

The Bishop in his homily thanked the Parish Priest of Somanya, VRev. Fr. Bright Agyapong and the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) for accepting to host such an august ceremony. The Bishop in reference to the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle stated that he was a great preacher of the faith and that Christians all over the world are encouraged to celebrate and pray for unity. The Bishop asserted from the first reading, 1 Tim. 3:8-13 that St. Paul through the text was addressing all levels of the human person through the grace and mercy of God. The Bishop in his reflection on the Gospel reading from John 12:24-26 reiterated that unless the deacons understand that like wheats, they must be planted in the soil, which will die, then they cannot bear trees with big branches and fruits which will serve as food and shelter for all people—resonating evangelization.

POPE JOHN SHS AND MINOR SEMINARY GETS ITS 10TH SUBSTANTIVE HEADMASTER

Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum has inducted into office a new Headmaster for Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (POJOSS) at Effiduase, Koforidua in in the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, on Saturday 21st January 2023.

Very. Rev. Fr. Benjamin Opoku Ohene, the newly inducted Headmaster of the school is a priest from the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra. He becomes the 10th Substantive Headmaster of the Seminary Secondary School since it was established in 1958 by the late Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD.
The induction ceremony also coincided with the commemoration of the Founders’ Day of the school. The Founder’s Day commemoration is marked annually to remember those who birthed and laid down their service for the development of the school. Those gallant personalities in whose memory a wreath was laid include Most Rev. Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD (Founder of POJOSS), Rev. Fr. Alphonse Elsbernd, SVD (First Headmaster of the School) and Nana Frempong Mposo II (Effiduasehene at the start of the school through whose instrumentality, the school land was acquired), all of Blessed Memory.

BISHOP AFRIFAH-AGYEKUM DEDICATES GROTTO @ AKOSOMBO

Santa Barbara Catholic Akosombo has celebrated 60 years of its existence on the theme: " Santa Barbara @ 60: A call to Communion; Unity in Creed, Worship and Evangelization”.

As part of the activities to climax the anniversary, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, the Bishop of Koforidua Diocese, paid a pastoral visit to the Akosombo Parish to celebrate with them during which he confirmed 39 candidates prepared for the sacrament.

Unique among the activities to mark the 60th Anniversary was the dedication of a new Grotto in honour of Our Lady of Fatima which was dedicated by the Bishop on Monday 13th August, 2022. It would serve as a place of prayer and worship in the spiritual growth of Parishioners and other residents in the Akosombo catchment area.

The prelate encouraged Parishioners to frequent the Grotto for the personal, families, and community spiritual exercise as they seek the face of God through the intercession of the blessed virgin Mary. The bishop was full of praise for those who contributed to build the grotto especially Mrs Feliza Diaz and Santa Barbara parishioners. He thanked the parish priest Very Rev. Fr Eric Evans Akahoho and the Project Committee of the parish for a good job done.

SANTA BARBARA, AKOSOMBO MARKS 60TH ANNIVERSARY

The Santa Barbara Catholic Church, Akosombo has celebrated its 60th Anniversary. The Anniversary marks a critical milestone of bringing spiritual growth to Catholics in the Akosombo Parish and its Outstations. From Friday 12th to Monday 15th August, 2022 Several activities were held to mark the celebrations.

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, Most Rev.Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum was the main celebrant for the Anniversary Mass, assisted by Monsignor Bobby Benson and some Priests in the Diocese of Koforidua.

Most Rev Joseph Afrifa-Agyekum urged Parishioners in his homily, on Sunday, 14th August, to remain united in the service and commitment to God and the Church. "As a Parish community you need to understand the sense of unity; believe in your creed/faith and let that unite you, and work hard for God and your Parish"

He admonished them to deepen their faith, reject sin and evangelize as the Holy Father has directed. He encouraged them to be proud of their faith and practices. “You have been commissioned at Baptism to be witnesses and agents of Evangelization for the Church."

The theme for the 60th Anniversary was; " Santa Barbara @ 60: A call to Communion; Unity in Creed, Worship and Evangelization.”

SIX NEW PRIESTS FOR KOFORIDUA DIOCESE

On Saturday, 6th August, Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum ordained six Deacons into the Priesthood for the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua in a colourful ceremony at Santa Barbara Catholic Church, Akosombo. The newly ordained priests are Rev. Fr Michael Owusu Frimpong of New Tafo Parish, Rev. Fr Eric Etse Amevor of Adoagyiri-Nsawam Parish, and Rev. Fr. Eric Godsway Amuyao of Akosombo Parish. The rest are Rev. Fr Moses Kofi Teye of Agomanya Parish, Rev. Fr. Francis Eduah of Suhum Parish and Rev. Fr Edwin Tetteh Okletey of Nkurakan.

The ordaining bishop, Most Rev. Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, began his homily by thanking God for the Ordinandi's acceptance and response to the call to be ordained into the ministerial priesthood. He also expressed his appreciation to the Parish Priest, V. Rev. Fr. Eric Evans Yayra Akahoho, the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) and the entire Parishioners of Santa Barbara Catholic Church for accepting to host the Priestly Ordination. He as well thanked the parents of the Ordinandi for gladly offering their sons to Mother Church without any reservation. He further showed gratitude to the parishioners of the Ordinandi, the vocations team, and the Seminary Formators for accompanying them on their journey to the priesthood.

BISHOP AFRIFAH-AGYEKUM ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT OF RECOWA.

Most Rev. Joseph Afrifah-Agyekum, Bishop of Koforidua Diocese, has been elected as the Vice President of the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) at the just ended 4th General Assembly held from the 2nd-9th May, 2022, in Abuja-Nigeria.

 

The RECOWA-CERAO comprises 154 Catholic Dioceses spread across 11 Catholic Bishops’ Conferences in 16 countries of Anglophone and Francophone Africa. The 16 countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Guinee, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Mauritania, and Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, and Togo.

 

Previously, Bishop Afrifah served as the Chairperson of the Biblical, Theological and Liturgical Commission.
